What is sport massage?
Sports massage is a form of manual therapy that focuses on the musculoskeletal system, including muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia (collectively known as soft tissues).
What is the purpose of sport massage?
Sports massage aims to enhance physical performance by supporting recovery, preventing injury, and managing pain. It can also improve flexibility, mobility, and overall muscle function.
How does sport massage differ from other type of massages?
The main difference lies in the purpose and intensity of the techniques used.
Relaxation-based treatments, such as Swedish massage, are generally gentle and aim to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and improve overall wellbeing.
Deep tissue massage uses slower, more focused pressure to address chronic muscle tension and adhesions, making it effective for general aches, postural issues, and long-term tension.
Sports massage, however, is more targeted and functional, focusing on specific areas of tension or dysfunction to support performance, recovery, and movement efficiency.
Can I get a sport massage if I am not an athlete?
Absolutely.
Sports massage is suitable for anyone, not just athletes. It is particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing muscle tension, reduced mobility, or postural imbalances.
While it is not primarily designed for relaxation, it can help improve range of motion, increase circulation, and reduce muscle tightness, supporting recovery and overall physical wellbeing.
Does a sport massage hurt?
Sports massage can sometimes feel intense or uncomfortable, but it should not be painful.
Communication between the client and therapist is essential to ensure that pressure remains within a comfortable range. The aim is to address muscle tension and imbalances effectively while still providing a positive and beneficial experience.
Do I need to know which technique I want used?
No—this will be discussed at the start of each session.
Treatment is tailored to your needs, goals, and preferences. Some sessions may focus on a single technique, while others may combine multiple approaches to achieve the best outcome.
Different Techniques
01
Full Body Sport Massage
Therapeutic treatment targeting all major muscle groups from top to toe, typically covering the back, shoulders, neck, arms, legs for a 60 min treatment, and also hands, and feet for a 90 min treatment.
04
Myofascial Dry Cupping
Myofascial dry cupping is a therapeutic technique using plastic or silicone cups to create vacuum suction on the skin, lifting tissues to release fascial adhesions, boost circulation, and relieve muscle tension. It enhances mobility and accelerates healing. Be aware this technique frequently leaves temporary, bruise-like, marks.
07
Pregnancy Massage
Pregnancy massage is specialized, therapeutic treatment designed to alleviate the aches, pains, and physical stress associated with pregnancy, typically using gentle, side-lying techniques tailored for safety after the first trimester.
It addresses specific areas of tension like the lower back, hips, legs, and neck.
02
Sport & Remedial Massage
Therapeutic treatment targeting specific areas of the body to address the root cause of pain. It is designed to treat musculoskeletal pain, injuries, and tension in muscles, tendons, and ligaments, and while often associated with sports, it treats conditions like sciatica, chronic back pain, and tension from desk work.
05
Assisted Stretching
Assisted stretching, also called stretchology, is a hands-on, passive stretching technique where your therapist guides your body through movements to improve flexibility, mobility, and muscle recovery. Unlike self-stretching, this method allows for deeper, targeted muscle release by relaxing the muscles while an external force applies controlled pressure. It can be combined with Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Techniques (PNF) for optimal and long term results.
08
IASTM
IASTM stands for Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation and is a manual therapy technique using specialised instruments to detect and treat soft tissue restrictions, aiming to improve mobility, reduce pain, and promote tissue healing. It can also be used to break down scar tissue and adhesions, as well as stimulate the body’s healing response.
03
Hot Stones
Hot stone sports massage combines traditional, deep-tissue sports massage techniques with the application of heated, smooth basalt stones to target muscle tension and aid recovery. The heat from the stones penetrates deeply, warming up tight muscles, increasing circulation, and allowing the therapist to work more effectively on stubborn knots.
06
Kinesiology Taping
Kinesiology taping is a therapeutic technique using thin, stretchy, adhesive cotton strips applied to the skin to support muscles and joints, reduce pain, and decrease swelling without restricting motion. The elastic tape mimics the skin's elasticity, allowing for full range of motion while providing support, enhancing proprioception (body awareness), and facilitating muscle function.
It lifts the skin, creating more space between the skin and underlying tissues, which helps reduce inflammation and improves blood/lymphatic flow. It also support weak or injured muscle and joints.
